I began my professional career after completing my engineering studies in 1986, working in industry and more specifically on international infrastructure construction projects. I focused my choice of company on those developing technologies that would ultimately impact people’s daily lives: energy, telecommunications, rail transport.
These projects introduced me to the business world and the wider world: Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, North America, and Europe, of course. Speaking a foreign language taught me that language is not just an equivalence of words, but also a feeling conveyed by the culture specific to each language.
After gaining some experience with these projects, I gradually developed a personal interest in understanding people, first within the company, and then beyond the professional activities, relating to lifetime existential developement.
I therefore gradually trained myself in Transactional Analysis theory, which I had encountered several times during my scientific training. This theory is complex and takes time to grasp, yet it is simple in its approach. I like this complexity, which speaks to me of my patients’ complexity as much as my own, and which often raises more questions than it provides ready-made solutions. It is by listening to the patient that understanding and rapport are born; theory serves only as a reference for making hypotheses that the patient will either confirm or refute.
The active, human, and scientific community of Transactional Analysis is also an important and structuring resource for me in this learning process.
