The profession of psychological counsellor

A psychological counsellor is a professional who provides support in the field of psychotherapy. Such professionnal relies on the a specific method in which he/she has been thouroughly trained for several years ; in my case, this is Transactional Analysis.

Training means not only knowledge but also the acquisition of how to professionnaly related with a client seeking psychological help.

Regardless of their title, all members of the FF2P must demonstrate:

  • in-depth personal psychotherapy,
  • theoretical, methodological, and practical training in a recognized method,
  • training in clinical psychopathology,
  • ongoing supervision throughout their professional practice,
  • a commitment to abide by the profession’s code of ethics,
  • accreditation by a national peer review committee.

These rigorous criteria were established by the Strasbourg Declaration on Psychotherapy, signed on October 21, 1990, by representatives of 14 countries in Western and Eastern Europe, and form the cornerstone of the European Association for Psychotherapy, which today has 120,000 psychotherapy practitioners in 41 countries.
